We have been talking about how to explain the changes in the moon, or its phases. There is another change we are all familiar with, but few people really understand the cause: the seasons.
In this thread, post YOUR ideas about what might cause the seasons. Of course you could look something up, but copying and pasting something doesn't mean that is what you believe or that you understand it - this is a time to practice your creative thinking, communication, and debate skills.
So, rather than spending time looking something up that you may or may not understand - post the first idea you think of to explain why we have different seasons.

the rotation of the earth around the sun along with our planet's revoloutions create the seasons

I think the seasons are caused by the rotation of the earth around the sun. When the earth is closer to the sun it is warmer, like during spring and summer. when the earth is farther away from the sun i think it causes the temperature on earth to be colder, like during fall and winter.

I think that we have differents seasons because of the way the way Earth rotates but, im not sure how it really effects it. I think that it may have something to do with the way the planets line up. maybe im not 100% sure though.

One point to help each of us understand the discussion:
Rotation is the Earth spinning on its axis.
Revolution is the Earth going around the sun.

My first reaction is that the earth rotates and so when it rotates in a certain direction, a part of the earth doesn't get as much sun light/warmth from the sun. Thus, it makes it colder and less warm which changes the seasons as the earth rotates.

While the father away from the sun idea is partly correct, there is another reason for the seasons i'm sure few people think of. The earth doesn't rotate a set way. It's like a top, or a ball. When it rotates, it tends to shift a little, so when it's winter in america, it could be summer in australia (spelling). So it's not a set turn like this line shows ------------------- it's more like this /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ But not as extreme.

My idea for what causes seasons is that when the Earth is farther away from the Sun, then comes Fall/Winter and when it is getting closer to the Sun, then it is Spring/Summer. The seasons are determined on where the earth is in relation to the sun. The earth is tilted at a 23.5 degree angle, and in rotates in an oval shape around the sun. When the earth is at its farthest points, the season is either spring or fall, depending on your location on earth. Since the earth is tilted, when the earth is closer to the sun in it's orbit, it is either winter or summer, once again depending on your location on earth. When where you are is close to the sun but tilted away, it is winter, but when where you are on earth is on the other side of the sun and tilted towards the sun, it is summer.

The seasons are caused by the way the earth is tilted to the sun. When it is tilted and North America is closest to the sun that is summer for us and when it is tilted the other way it is winter for us and in the middle when it is spinning to change which way it is tilted that is when it is spring and fall.

So when its summer in North America and winter in Australia, it looks like this / 0 (the / is the earth and the 0 is the sun) we are the top part of the slanted line and Australia is the bottom part. Since they are farther away from the sun, it is winter.

My idea is that seasons are based on how far the earth is from the sun and how the earth is on its axis.

I agree with Anh. I think the colder seasons come when the Earth isn't as close to the sun, but further away. And the warmer seasons like Summer and Spring come when earth is closer to the sun. I also think it has a lot to do with Earths atmoshpere.

I think the seasons are cause by the earth spinning and orbiting around the sun. And where the sun is positioned around the earh at different times during the year. Or maybe the sun changes temperatures throughout the year. Which causes Earth to cool down or heat up causing the leaves to change, frost, snow etc.

my prediction is that the earth getting closer and farther away from the sun to creat seasons
