What about fish? Do they float? Why do they go "belly up" when they die?

Hey- When we go swiming in water we can do the backfloat and such, but sometimes we sink to the bottom. Why do we sometimes float and sometimes not? Do we float? How could you control that? [glow=red,2,300]i just remember when i took swim lessons when i was little my coach told me was to just keep my back and legs up and you'll float...haha[/glow]

i think it deals with the amount of air in you. a cannonball just makes you sink because you have so much force you have to go through water but if you dont swim to the top right away then i think you will float back up. But laying on you're back i dont know how that works.

You are able to float because of the air inside you. When you hold your breath you float because the air is trying to get to the surface. When you let your breath out then you start to sink.

Fish go belly up because even though they live in the water they still need oxygen. So when they die all of the oxygen inside them floats to the top.
